Chichester – Capital City of West Sussex The cosmopolitan city of Chichester has history on every corner, from the Roman Walls and the Tudor Market Cross to the Georgian terraces and the 12th century cathedral. Chichester also hosts a variety of cultural festivals - notably being home to the Chichester Festival Theatre and 2007 Gallery of the Year, Pallant House Gallery. Chichester is becoming increasingly popular as a shopping haven, with a variety of high street shops and boutiques. The city is popular with those who enjoy watersports, as nearby Chichester Harbour with its picturesque villages of Bosham and Itchenor offer yachting, water-skiing and other activities.
Chichester – a unique blend of cosmopolitan city, contrasting coast and picturesque countryside.
Coastal charm
On the coast, there’s something for every mood - the yachtie heaven of Chichester Harbour, the wild, windswept beauty of East Head’s sand dunes, the classic English seaside at Selsey and the boho surfer vibe of the Witterings.
Bosham is one of the prettiest villages on the south coast. With its lovely and ancient church (which appears on the Bayeux Tapestry), waterside meadow, the busy cafes, pub and sailing club, it combines a beautiful setting next to Chichester Harbour with a vibrant but relaxed atmosphere.
Located a few miles south of Chichester, The Witterings has been a popular destination since Roman times. Then, as now, it enjoys a sheltered natural harbour, a sandy coastline, and - with much of this precious environment protected as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - stunning scenery, an abundance of birdlife and timeless tranquillity. With its own microclimate, protected as it is by the South Downs, little wonder the area is known locally as 'God's Pocket'.
